The Square Tailed Kite

Injured and lying
in a field and dying,
alone and in despair.
Majestic in flight,
and fierce in fight
but pathetic just lying there.

Alone it will die,
but help soon comes by
and its brought in and treated with caring.
And in shock and quite ill
it laid very still,
beak open and eyes simply staring.

But yet in the morning
With a golden sun dawning
It was agile, awake and aware.
So it was "off to the vet"
and it seemed right and yet
I was reluctant to leave it there.

I listened and cried
for it had not simply died,
they'd decided to put it down.
"It's wing was too broken"
The Vet God had spoken.
I left in a daze with a frown.

If it had been canine
or rabbit or feline
with an owner with money to spare,
it would have the injections,
the splints and corrections,
the ultimate veterinary care.

But because it was wild,
a "nobody's child"
(the government won't pay the cost)
this creature was killed
by someone quite "skilled"
and the life of another was lost......

To my totem...the eagle in all it's forms.... fly free...
