Genghis Khan burial place uncovered
ABC Online 18/8/2001
An expedition of United States and Mongolian archaeologists believes it has discovered the
burial place of the 13th Century conqueror, Genghis Khan.
The New York Times reports that the site, 320 kilometers north-east of the Mongolian
capital Ulan Bator, is intriguing because it is close to places important in Genghis
Khan's life.
John Woods, history professor at the University of Chicago, says a walled burial ground
has been found a few kilometers from where Genghis Khan is believed to have been born in
1162.
The archaeological team has yet to receive permission to excavate the stone-bordered
graves.
But it says some 20 unopened tombs at the top of a hill are thought to contain people of
upper status.
Genghis Khan was proclaimed emperor of the Mongols in 1206.
By the time of his death in 1227, he ruled an area from China to the Caspian Sea.
