Ancient Mayan maize discovered

GUATEMALA: A joint US-Guatemalan research team has found evidence that Mayans grew maize
7000 years ago on Guatemala's southern coast. Pollen residue trapped within charred
remnants of ancient mangrove trees on the Pacific coast led to the unique discovery, said
Guatemalan archaeologist Barbara Arroyo in presenting the study at an annual conference in
Guatemala city. END
