'Secret' weed could hold cancer key
ABC News Online 09/12/2002 (item was "pulled" later that day)
A commonly found weed could emerge as a simple cure for common skin cancers.
An international cancer conference in Hobart has heard a new prescription treatment for
non-melanoma skin cancers could be on the market within a few years.
Professor Peter Parsons from the Queensland Insitute of Medical Research is working with a
Queensland company to develop the treatment and expects to move to human trials next year.
However, he was reluctant to identify the weed.
"We prefer not to because we don't want to have people treating themselves without
medical supervision," he said.
"We've found out a fair bit about it, we know that there's a compound in the plant
which we've purified.
"It's able to get into the tumour cells and kill them and also to do that in such a
way that there is no recurrence of the tumour."

Webmaster's note:
This news item mysteriously "disappeared" from the ABC's web site later that
day... Totally !!!
(luckily I managed to retrieve it from my computer's cache..)
I smell a corporate rat,
with money being the reason that this item was "pulled".
The comments re "developing the treatment", and "compound in the plant which we've purified" point to this being
marketed as an expensive product made from a VERY common weed....
Oh yeah, wanna know what the weed
is? Plantain !
Plantain Major is the common name, and it was prescribed by the late Edgar Cayce as
a cure for skin cancer....
