Girl, 4, becomes a goddess

KATHMANDU: A four-year-old girl was chosen yesterday to be Nepal's new Hindu living virgin
goddess, her father said. Known as the Kumari of Kathmandu, the goddess is seen as the
patron deity of the ancient Himalayan kingdom. The Nepalese believe the Kumari should
never smile nor laugh during her reign, as if she did, it would mean great misfortune for
the country.
