Missing asteroid headed for earth
ABC ONLINE 5/4/2002
An asteroid - rediscovered after a 50-year absence - could be on a collision course with
earth, but the planet has 877 years and 11 months to prepare for the potential
catastrophe, according to a NASA scitentist.
The asteroid could cause immense damage through a direct hit.
NASA scientist Jon Giorgini says the odds of a collision are about 300 to one but the risk
is much greater than that of any other asteroid striking the planet.
He says the collision could happen in the Year 2880.
"This asteroid was first discovered over 50 years ago in 1950, but it then faded in
view and was lost for half a century until being rediscovered on New Year's Eve of
2000," he said. END OF REPORT
