King tides reveal archaeological heritage
ABC Online 28/09/2001
Seasonal king tides have uncovered old shipwrecks off the New South Wales central coast
and mid-north coast.
A wreck off Blacksmith's Beach, near the entrance of Lake Macquarie, is believed to be the
'Lowestoft', an iron paddle-steamer that was swamped by high seas in 1864.
Another wreck believed to be a Dutch submarine, the K-IX, was lost in a towing accident
off Seal Rocks near the end of World War II and was buried by sand.
The K-IX was already famous, having encountered a Japanese submarine in the Sydney Harbour
raid of 1942.
Marine archaeologist Tim Smith, says the public is welcome to inspect the wreck.
"It hasn't really been out to this degree in 27 years, since 1974," he said.
