Palaeontolgists say the Riversleigh World Heritage property in north-west
Queensland has once again revealed an important key to history, with the find of a 25
million-year-old marsupial lion skull.
Ms Chambers says it is only the second complete skull found since Riversleigh's discovery
more than 100 years ago.
She says she expects the skull to be slowly released from its rock vault within the next
six to eight weeks.
"Marsupial lions to begin with, because we don't have a lot of material on them not a
lot is known about where they actually evolved from," Ms Chambers said.
"Not only could it help us find out where these animals are coming from, it'll also
help with correlating different sites together, getting an age date and basically just
pulling the entire Riversleigh story together."END OF REPORT
